The roots of the gentian species contain some of the most bitter compounds known to man and make an excellent tonic for the digestive system.
Grows best in an average to moist, acidic, well-drained soil, in partial shade and where it is protected from the hot, afternoon sun. Tolerant of full sun with adequate moisture. Winter wet sites may result in root rot. Primarily grown in alpine habitats where summers are cool and damp.
