Best sheltered from strong winds, it produces a basal rosette of strap-shaped, grayish-green leaves. From the centre of each rosette, a thick, leafless stem appears topped by a dense, globular, softball sized cluster of tiny, star-shaped, lilac-purple florets. This plant is not used for culinary purposes.

Leaves die back as flowers begin; don't cut back foliage as it feeds the bulb for next year's flower. Once the flower is spent, remove the flower stalk and leave the foliage until it completely dies back, it can then be removed by gently pulling on the leaves. Do not over water and let the soil dry out between waterings.
