This perennial sedge produces dark green leaves, branching from the main stems. Spikelets form small, rounded clusters on the terminal tips.

Grows in marshes, along pond shorelines, and in bogs, in full sun to light shade. This sedge spreads by rhizomes and can be grown in water up to 1.5 m deep.
