The upright, cylindrical stems display slender, sheathed leaves at their bases. This sedge produces panicles of seedheads which emerge terminally, from one side of the stem.

Grows in marshes, along pond shorelines, and in bogs, in full sun to light shade. This sedge spreads by rhizomes and can be grown in water up to 1.5 m deep.
