An emergent, aquatic member of the sedge family with dense, slow-spreading tussocks of arching, basal, green leaves. The woolly inflorescence produces cinnamon-coloured seeds.

Grows in marshes, along pond shorelines, or in bogs in full sun to light shade. Can be grown in the garden but must have a consistently moist soil. This self-seeding sedge also spreads slowly by rhizomes.
