The distinctive, smooth, gray bark, dark green leaves and an upright, oval to rounded shape will accent any garden. It produces an edible nut enclosed in a spiny husk which ripens in the fall.
Native to Ontario and parts of North America.
Female flowers give way to triangular nuts enclosed in spiny bracts. Beech nuts ripen in the fall and are edible.
American beech tree at maturity is ideal for large spaces such as lawns, parks and naturalized areas.
