They are noted for their large white bracts maturing pink, exfoliating tan and gray bark adding winter interest, and large pinkish-red, raspberry-like fruit. Vase-shaped when young, they develop a rounded outline of distinct horizontal branching with maturity.

The showy flowers seen on Cornus kousa cultivars are actually bracts surrounding the smaller, inconspicuous flower in the centre.
Grows best in medium moisture and an acidic, well-drained soil, however, they will tolerate a range of light levels. Can be grown as a specimen tree or shrub.
