An excellent specimen tree with tassel-like, red flowers appearing in late winter or early spring. They sport an oval, rounded head and reddish-purple-to-green foliage which changes to yellow, orange, and scarlet in autumn. The exfoliating bark reveals a medley of colours: silver-gray, green, white, and tan.
Parrotia grows best in a slightly acidic soil, with a tolerance for a range of soil types and conditions; an excellent plant for urban situations.
