The cylindrical seeds or "cucumbers" (hence the common name) are green in late summer, ripening to red, and drying to a brown colour in the fall. The greenish-yellow flowers, narrow, pointed leaves, straight trunk, and rounded crown are characteristic of this plant.

Unlike most magnolia, which are grown as a multi-stemmed form, cucumbertree magnolia has a straight trunk. Best grown in a slightly acidic soil and is intolerant of drought, excessive moisture, and pollution. Any pruning should be done soon after flowering, to allow the plant enough time to reset buds for the following year. May take a few years to produce flowers.
