Culms (stems) emerge from the ground at their ultimate thickness. They do not thicken as they age.
This bamboo grows best in an average to dry, well-drained soil, in full sun or light shade. Depending on the location in the landscape, it may need protection from the hot afternoon sun. Clumping bamboo do not spread via rhizomes, but can move sidewalk slabs etc., so position them wisely.
