The narrow, columnar form has a tendency to spiral as it grows, providing a vertical accent to the landscape. The chamaecyparis-like scaly, green, fine-textured foliage is very attractive.
Benefits from watering well in the fall and during prolonged, winter dryness. Deer find the soft, evergreen foliage very attractive for winter food and will rapidly strip a plant.
Typically grown as a hedge, this cedar can also be used in groupings for windscreens. Tolerates a wide range of soils, however, it does best in moist, humid conditions and mulching is recommended for the root zones. If planted in the summer or fall, protection (burlap wrap) from drying, winter winds is recommended for the first season.
