The common name is derived from the whorls of needles radiating out like the spokes of an umbrella. The needles are flat and dark green colour covering the branches on this dense, narrow conifer.
A moist, rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil and full sun are the best growing environment for this plant. Soil should not be allowed to dry out and it may need protection from the hot afternoon sun.
