A fast-growing tree with a broad, open, oval habit. Their many features include yellow twigs, coarsely toothed, green leaves, and gummy end buds. The seeds have silky hairs which look like cotton balls as they float through the air.

Native to Ontario and most of North America.
The leaves are rich in protein and amino acids and can be as nourishing as meat. The bark contains salicin, an ingredient in aspirin.
It will tolerate a range of soil types and pH, growing best in moist, well-drained conditions and does not tolerate shade. A good, pioneer plant, providing habitat for other plants.
