This hardy, oval to rounded, nut tree produces delicious, edible nuts. The compound leaves are fragrant when crushed. Some plants are highly sensitive to the juglone chemical that this tree produces, so careful consideration should be given to the understory plants, making sure they have a tolerance to the chemical.

Native to Ontario and parts of North America.
Native Americans used the nuts for food and boiled the tree sap for syrup. They also reportedly threw the husks into ponds to poison fish, making them easier to catch.
A great tree for larger landscapes and natural areas. Placement should be considered as the litter from the nuts can be very messy. Juglans produce the chemical juglone, and many plants are highly sensitive to this chemical. Look for plants with a tolerance to the toxicity near or under juglans. A great tree for attracting squirrels.
