Upright clumps have triangular, green fronds with contrasting, dark reddish-brown stems. Light green to golden new growth has a covering of maroon-coloured hairs. Winter mulching is recommended.

Dryopteris grows best in a moist to average, well-drained soil, in partial to full shade. They need constant moisture and do not like to dry out.
