Although it has the appearance of a painted fern, it forms a massive, arching clump of silver, green, and burgundy fronds on purple stems. A giant in the fern family.

Grows best in a rich, moist, well-drained soil in full to partial shade. Colours are more distinct in light shade. Stems can be pruned off in the fall after frost. Due to the large size of the fronds a sheltered spot out of high winds would be advisable.
