An upright shrub when young, more arching with maturity. Clusters of small, fragrant, white flowers bear persistent, purple-black fruit. This plant has a wine-red fall colour. Adaptable to wet or dry, sandy soils and is salt tolerant.

Black chokeberry tolerates a wide range of soils and conditions including boggy. Will grow in full sun to partial shade, although best fruit production usually occurs in full sun. Remove root suckers to prevent colonial spread.
